Unfortunately, even with proper care they will most likely need to be replaced somewhere around the seven-to-ten-year mark. Furthermore, if your dentures do incur any damage, they may need to be repaired or replaced sooner, making regular visits to your dentist to examine both your mouth and your dentures imperative.

If you wear dentures, keep an eye out for these warning signs that could indicate it’s time to replace them!

Fit Changes

Do you notice your dentures are fitting differently than they used to? This is a good indication that it’s time for a new pair. Over time, your bone structure can change, causing your dentures to have trouble staying in place and making it difficult to eat and speak when you wear them.

Broken Base or Crowns

While a broken tooth does not necessarily mean you need to replace your dentures (they may just require repair) a broken base most likely does. This is because bacteria can easily accumulate, raising your risk of oral health problems like gum disease. It can also cause discomfort, or for your dentures to fit improperly.

Staining and Discoloration

Much like natural teeth, dentures can develop stains or become discolored over time. This will occur much faster if you don’t care for them properly, or if you smoke or drink dark fluids like coffee, soda, or red wine. While you don’t necessarily need to replace stained dentures, wanting a newer, fresher pair is a perfectly valid reason to do it!

Pain, Sores, and Speech Changes

If you notice pain while wearing your dentures, if you feel and see the formation of sores along your gums where your dentures sit, or if it becomes difficult for you to speak with them in, these are all strong indicators that it’s time for a new pair. Your dentures should fit your jaws securely and should not slide around or cause pain when inserted.

Longer-Term Tooth Replacement Options

If you’re looking for a longer-lasting solution to replacing lost teeth, you may also want to consider dental implants, which adhere to your jawbone and last longer than traditional dentures.

Dental implants can last up to 20 years with proper care. They also look and feel like your natural teeth, and stay securely in your mouth, so there’s never a need for adhesives or worrying about changes in fit.

If you’re concerned about the condition of your dentures or if you notice any changes in the feel of your mouth including sores, pain, or sensitivity, it’s time to schedule an evaluation with your dentist.

About Our Practice

Dr. Eric Heisser and Dr. Ariel Heisser are the husband-and-wife team that make up Laketown Family Dental in Norton Shores, MI.

Dr. Ariel and Dr. Eric and the Laketown Family Dental team work together to collaborate on providing the best care for you and your family.
