You might’ve chosen clear aligners as a braces alternative because of their discreet appearance. The trays you wear don’t have any shiny metal to them, so they can easily blend into your smile. However, as you go about your treatment, have you noticed that they have started to turn a bit yellow? This can then make your grin look a bit odd, so here’s why this discoloration happens and how to stop it.

Why Are My Clear Aligners Starting to Turn Yellow

The first question you might have about yellowing aligners is, “Why is this happening?” Well, several culprits can be at play, such as:

  • Plaque may have hardened on your trays. This can happen if it gets transferred to them, especially if you don’t brush or floss after eating.
  • Saliva can stain your pillows, and the same can happen to this type of orthodontics.
  • Colored mouthwash might cause this discoloration if you use it while wearing your aligners, as it gets trapped between them and your teeth.
  • Drinking beverages while wearing your trays can be the cause, based on the reasoning of the point above.

Can I Get Rid of the Yellow Tint on My Aligners?

Regardless of the culprit behind your yellowed aligners, they might make you self-conscious when wearing them. If you still have several days left before you swap to your next pair, then there are ways you can lighten the discoloration. Gently scrub them with a white vinegar and water mixture or with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Either can reduce the intensity of it, but they might not completely get rid of it.

What Can I Do to Avoid Yellow Aligners?

While not-so-clear trays can leave you down, there is some good news to look forward to! You will have to switch to a new pair relatively soon anyway to keep you on track with your treatment. Once you do, you can get back to the discreet look that might’ve encouraged you to get them in the first place. By following these tips, you can avoid this discoloration from happening to this set:

  • Only have water with your aligners in, don’t eat or drink any other beverage.
  • Brush and floss after every meal to remove food debris and plaque that can transfer to your trays.
  • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush or special cleaning crystals to keep your aligners sparkling. It’s best to do it after you eat, but try to keep up with it twice a day.

Keep these tips in mind and turn them into habits; that way, you can avoid a yellow tint and feel confident throughout your orthodontic treatment.
