Clear aligners have become one of the most popular ways to straighten teeth without the hassle of metal brackets and wires. But even though your aligners create a protective barrier over your teeth for most of the day, they don’t make you immune to tooth decay! In fact, certain habits during treatment can actually make it easier for cavities to form if you’re not careful. Here’s what you need to keep in mind.
Why Cavities Can Still Happen with Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are designed to fit snugly against your teeth, which is great for shifting them into place. However, that same snug fit can trap saliva, food particles, and bacteria against your enamel if you’re not diligent about hygiene. Since aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day, any plaque or sugary residue left behind has uninterrupted contact with your teeth. Over time, this can lead to enamel erosion and the beginning of a cavity.
Signs a Cavity Might Be Forming
In pretty much all cases, catching a cavity sooner makes treatment far simpler and less invasive. That said, keep an eye out for these early signs:
- White or brown spots on your teeth
- Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
- Visible pits or holes in a tooth
- Persistent bad breath, even after brushing
- Discomfort when biting down

Preventing Cavities During Clear Aligner Treatment
The good news is that cavities are highly preventable with a few consistent habits:
- Brush before reinserting your aligners and never put your aligners back in over unbrushed teeth. Don’t skip flossing, either.
- Rinse your aligners daily with lukewarm water to remove bacteria buildup.
- Avoid sugary or acidic drinks while wearing your aligners and stick to only water.
- Keep up with regular checkups and cleanings so we can monitor your teeth and gums throughout treatment.
A straighter smile shouldn’t come at the cost of a healthy one, and with the right habits, cavities don’t have to be part of your clear aligner journey!
